Cool story! Whatever Dater’s faults, real or made up by jealous rivals, he’s easily the best Avs beat writer out there, even if he’s no longer credentialed.

Love it, Pat. Thank you for sharing this special memory. In a quip back to your wife did you channel your inner Brett Hull and say "you do not get to talk to Mr. Sakic"?

As for AD, I'm ride or die with the man. A loyalty born from having also experienced his thoughtfulness and generosity. AD has a positive impact beyond just the scope of Avalanche hockey.

To say I'm jealous of you truly wouldn't even scratch the surface. I can't imagine. I too am 39 years old and joe has been my idol since the early Quebec days. I don't know that I could speak if given the chance. I wrote him a letter and he was kind enough to sign my jerseys, but what an honor. I think the people that crap on dater are taking the easy shot in a way...never bothering to go beneath the surface to see who he is and how much he truly cares about the subjects he covers. I will truly miss him when he ends his avs coverage.

Man, the part about looking at your aging and elderly dog, and knowing the inevitable hits home. This got me emotional, as I am going through the same. Every day is a gift with him. Why are the onions making my eyes water right now?

We got a bad diagnosis a few months back. It’s ramped up in the last few weeks, so we just do everything we can to have fun with our girl before she heads on her way over the bridge.

Very sorry, Pat. Our old German Shorthair boy is 15 in September. He’s slowing, but has a zest for life. However, I know that each day brings us nearer that dreaded time.

I always enjoy reading your stories Pat, as I've always enjoyed reading Dater over the years. Keep up the great work. My Sakic story is my wife was his nurse when he got his hand caught in the snowblower. Despite him probably knowing that may be a career ending incident, she said he was one of the most pleasant patients she'd ever had. They had some great conversation. I was mad because she wouldn't let me bring all our Sakic jerseys down to the hospital to see if he would sign them, even if it was with his left hand.

Wow. Thats a subject I’ve always avoided with Joe. He ended up being very lucky. Many times, a finger is lost in those very common accidents
