This is why you are the NHL reporter, because frankly, you have balls and it scares the crap out of those who want to be politically correct. I am too old to want watered down news, or censored news, get too much of that on CNN vs FOX. I subscribe to you for one purpose, to get the truth on the Avs, and it's not always pretty. You rock Dater, truly you do, and young journalists need to model after you, not retweeters on twitter. I'm too old school to worry about who I offend, being a Pastor if I watered down what I believe to be the truth, who would I be. Keep it up, well done my friend !!

People are allowed to speculate and discuss what is happening. There is just a segment of Twitter who act superior to others and view themselves as the arbiter of the team. They should be ignored.

Well I’d say his unexpected absence and in particular the Avs’ cryptic PR has caused quite a stir, a real mystery in fact. It’s human nature to be curious even more now when all is left to the imagination to speculate what happened in a Seattle hotel in the middle of the night.

What we are all wondering of course is are the Avs being tight-lipped to protect Nichushkin’s privacy or are they potentially protecting themselves?

The Avs as an organization have a habit of not being forthcoming with information as we most recently saw with Landy’s “season ending” press conference. In the end their lack of transparency really didn’t help them as questions are still being asked about the club’s management of the situation.

And now we lose another forward who not only scored a crucial goal in game 2 but also was singled out as an important piece of the roster with a very nice contract last summer.

We all know how the moral landscape has shifted a bit in recent years, for better and for worse. And as fans I think most of us are in camp Val and would therefore happily give him whatever space he needs. Not sure you can blame us for wanting to know what’s going on.

It's your job as a journalist to ask questions, people have to realize that?

I'm also tired of this snowflake society where everything we say or do will make someone uncomfortable. AD is right when he says that it's our right to know what happened with the Nuke without going too deep in his privacy. I grew up in Quebec and if something like that would happen to a Canadien player, all the Montreal media would go ape shit over this kind of story.

I doubt any local media will break it if Dater doesn't. Just thinking about the last few offseasons/trade deadlines/etc. I can't remember a local reporter even reporting that the Avs had "interest" in a player or were getting close on a contract or whatever until a national guy or the team reported it. I guarantee it will be a national reporter that eventually breaks the story, and the local reporters will just talk about how "tight-lipped" the Avs are. Also, while people on Twitter like to flex their moral superiority by saying it's no one's business as to what the personal reasons are, the primary reason fans want to know what's going on is because they want to know when he's coming back. Obviously whenever there's this much mystery around a story there's naturally curiosity as to what's going on, but the main thing I want to know as a fan is when will he be back

Excellent article, Adrian. Again, I agree 100%. The problem today is that most people are hero worshippers and want their favorite player or team to be unbothered. There’s nothing wrong with being curious and asking questions. Being an athlete/public figure is different.

Thanks for the article and reminders AD. Yes, we live in a totally different era, with totally different rules and expectations, than we did several decades ago. Those changes are part of almost every aspect of our life. I saw the notification of this article on my phone and I am typing this on my laptop. Newspapers? What is that? The last time I regularly read a newspaper was when I traveled for a living and the USA Today would be delivered to my hotel room.

For better or worse, we now live in an era where everyone gets their news on electronic devices, just like this site. It also means we get it at any hour of the day, any day of the week. Hear a rumor? Quick, look it up on our phone! Instant gratification is the rule today, in almost every thing we do! No quick fix and it's withdraw, frustration, and anxiety.

I get the reason for privacy. It is hard today with that need for gratification and the ability to spread "the word" almost instantly to the entire world. It is also a world that millions of people believe every lie, every conspiracy theory, and unfortunately, many will act upon any bit of news they do not like in a negative, and sometimes, dangerous way. Last game Seattle forward Morgan Geekie unexpectedly missed the game. Rumors were swirling. The Kraken did not help by saying it was "personal reasons." Turns out, his wife was in labor. Would it have been better to just say that at the beginning or respect his family's privacy and just say "personal reasons?" Because of the times we live in, sometimes the best intentions can do more harm than good.

Finally, let's be honest. Almost everyone here and almost every Avs fans wants to know what is going on. Many of the righteous will quickly read the article that explains it all. The press has a job to do. The team has a job to do. Unfortunately, until the news is finally known, people will speculate and conspiracy theories will thrive. Sadly, even when the news is revealed, many will still clutch to the conspiracies and spread more rumors and lies. That is today's real environment we live in. Just take a look at what happened with Landeskog. There are still people claiming everyone is lying. Botched surgeries, botched rehabs. Why is he not with the team? Why is he with the team? Who knew and when? Life does not just happen as predicted and desired.

The news will come out at some point. We will all make our judgements on everyone involved. For some, it will control their lives and consume them. For others, we will just continue to root for our team, hope for the best, and move on. In the mean time, there is a game tonight to get ready for and watch. Time to live in the moment and know that when I wake up tomorrow, it will be Tuesday and life is good.

The information will get out at some point, it always does. But personally I think it's far better coming from someone who the players and organization know and trust, like you, than some random person.

That’s right AD... I understand that’s sth call “personal reason” but in the other hand we called them a”public figures”, so it’s not ordinary like us, and for fans I truly believe we, as a fans really want to know what’s really happening.

Hey AD, In a way you work for me now so I'll give it to you like your old bosses so you feel comfortable. Read it like you're hearing one of their voices again. Hey Dater, I don't give a rat's ass if you have to dig all the way to fucking China, you better be first on this story! If one of those assholes from the other place beats you, don't show your fucking face around here until you do something to take the stench off...do you hear me? Someone somewhere knows what the fuck is going on and it's your job to find them and rattle their fucking cage until they give it up. I don't care how you get it, just get it! Now get the fuck out of here, you're making me late for my tee time with the Mayor :-} Oh, and for all of you out there offended by the word fuck, I've been around news rooms and I can comfortably say that fuck is used as a noun, a verb and an adjective and fuck fuck fuck is a complete sentence. Deal with it.

This is a very newsworthy story. It is not anywhere near approaching tabloid or paparazzi style stalking that typically creates the murky or "is this really necessary" style reporting. A prominent player of the team has had to leave the organization in the middle of the playoffs, or what could be considered the highest workload / greatest work opportunity in his profession. It is very newsworthy to investigate what the expected impacts are (if known) or potential impacts are, and to know that, one needs to learn the circumstances that lead to the departure.

It may very well be determined that the cause of the situation is in fact not newsworthy (loss of a loved on for example that would be incredibly personal and impactful to the relative suffering the loss, but may not be newsworthy to the public at large, or those only interested from a professional impact standpoint.

It isn't wrong to be concerned about a player's availability to a team, it also isn't wrong to be curious as to what lead to this sudden change in status. Just as it isn't wrong to hope the loss of a player is due to something good (like Geekie's birth of a child), nor is it wrong to worry the loss of a player is due to something tragic. There is nothing wrong with pursuing information in order to gain clarity and write about it for the masses to learn, if it in fact does turn out to be something bad, then decisions can be made regarding how much information is necessary to release while painting as accurate of a story as possible, while omitting anything personal that is irrelevant to the masses.

Well if it’s anything like that you can call it a “family matter”. Not sure what’s so difficult about?! But I have a feeling it’s not that. My guess is there was an incident of some sort... my mind went to something like the Kuznetsov video from a few years ago, but of course I am just speculating.
