The expectation coming into the 2025-26 season was that with this top six, the Avalanche would be a high-scoring team night in and night out.
That was never going to be the case every night. Sometimes, you’ve got to grind one out. Thursday’s home opener against Utah was exactly that… a grind. But it was also a 2-1 win.
Sure, it started as a thing of beauty: a crisp passing sequence between Victor Olofsson and Jack Drury that ended with Ross Colton burying a great shot for Colorado’s first goal at Ball Arena this season. Then Nathan MacKinnon sniped his first of the year — a power-play laser into the top far corner — for what stood up as the game-winner. Everything between those two goals, and everything that followed, was a battle.
