The Avs Don't Have A Second-Round Draft Pick For The Next Three Years, And No 3rds In The Next Two. Was It Worth It?
The answer is yes, but they may regret losing that third second-rounder
I was looking over the Avalanche draft pick situation today, and it was a reminder that the cupboard is somewhat bare right now
compared to most teams.
For instance: the Avs currently don’t own a second-round pick for each of the next three drafts. They also currently do not own any third-round picks in the next two drafts. They do own first-round picks in the next three, and beyond.
The Avs dealt those picks away in trades. Let’s examine each of the trades and decide whether they were worth it in the end.
WHY THE AVS HAVE NO SECOND-ROUND PICK THIS YEAR: It was traded to the Anaheim Ducks, along with prospect defenseman Drew Helleson, for Josh Manson.
Was it worth it? Yes, because Manson was a big factor in the Avs winning a Stanley Cup last year, and anytime you win a Stanley Cup that benefited from a recent trade, it’s worth it. Helleson may go on to be a fine player and, well, Manson’s follow-up season didn’t go so great thanks to injuries. But it’s still a deal I’d do over again in a heartbeat, especially because Manson is signed for the next three years too.
