There should be more of them

We’ll all be watching the 17-1-6 Avalanche this afternoon against the new and improved Montreal Canadiens, with a 1:10 p.m. puck drop. For me, Saturday afternoon games were always my favorite games to cover, and I think there should be more of them.

Saturday afternoon games are great for many reasons. You can go out to dinner after the game, for one, and talk it over with friends or family. Not that night games can’t be plenty festive, but there’s just something about an afternoon game that brings out a bit more conviviality, either watching at home or at the game itself.

If you’re at an afternoon game, you’ve probably got the day off from work, so you’re automatically in a better mood. You’re not exhausted from a tough day at the office, and without the gloomy feeling of having to get back to work early that next morning.

I can tell you this, from having covered the NHL every day for about 27 years: players love afternoon games, too.
