Like many college students, I headed to Canada for Spring Break in 2006. Here I am responsibly enjoying a traditional local beverage or two in an effort to fully immerse myself in the culture.

This week, I’ve been called a traitor. A turncoat. Benedict Arnold.

I don’t care. I’m rooting for Canada in Sunday’s gold medal game.

There are plenty of reasons why I’m pulling for our neighbors to the north to win Olympic gold once again, but the biggest one is simple: I always have.

Since I was a kid, I’ve rooted for Team Canada.

The 1996 World Cup? Canada.
The 1998 Olympics? Canada.
The 2002 Olympics? Uhhhh… Canada.
The 2006 Olympics? You mean the team Joe Sakic captained? Yeah… Canada.
The 2010 Olympics? Ummm… Canada.
The 2014 Olympics? I rooted for all the stray dogs in Sochi to find loving homes… and Canada.
The 2025 4 Nations? You guessed it… Canada.
