Philly Punches First, But Avs Win by 3-2 Decision
Colorado shows fight in South Philly bout.
The Avalanche were punched early, but they bounced back. After 60 minutes, they were the ones with their hands victoriously in the air.
They never delivered a knockout punch in Sunday’s matinee in Philadelphia, but they didn’t need to. Colorado played a little rope-a-dope and outlasted the Flyers, 3-2, surviving a back-and-forth fight in South Philly.
Sean Couturier delivered the first blow for Philadelphia, scoring just 129 seconds into the game. The Flyers captain finished a low-to-high, high-to-low sequence by tipping in a point shot off the shaft of his stick while skating away from the top of the crease, putting Colorado on the ropes almost immediately.
The Avs responded through their heavyweight on the blue line. Brent Burns countered Couturier with his fourth goal of the season, tying the game and moving into ninth place on the NHL’s all-time list for goals by a defenseman. The 265th of Burns’ career moved him just ahead of the legendary Niklas Lidström.
