Well, let me get one personal thing out of the way: As someone who is going to tomorrow’s game in Boston, this sucks. I bought four tickets to bring the whole family to tomorrow’s game as a Christmas present to both kids with my daughter getting to go to her first Avs game to see her favorite player… Mikko Rantanen. Having to tell her that we can’t bring the signs we worked on before bed tonight to warmups tomorrow is going to suck when she wakes up.
Dater will post something tomorrow about his thoughts. He will be more or a newspaper man, while my thoughts below are from a fan’s perspective… sad fan’s perspective.
This move was always very much a possibility. I just don’t think many of us thought it would actually happen.
I don’t get the timing of it, though. I thought the longer we held onto Mikko, the more he could help us win games before any inevitable move. The longer we waited, the more we could have teams outbid one another to offer a better package for him. Instead, we moved him early in the process with weeks still left to wait out other possible offers.
That makes me think that more deals with big names have to be in their crosshairs. Freeing up that more money allows for a rental or even another player with term to be traded to Denver this season. I would assume it would also make the Avs much bigger players in free agency after this season to replenish a now depleted group of wingers.
