Just 48 hours after failing to score a goal in a 1-0 road loss in Winnipeg, the Colorado Avalanche scored five times in a 10-minute span at home against Carolina.
To try and find a reason for this kind of turnaround and fit it into any small amount of space here on this page would probably be an oversimplification.
Unless the reason is: sometimes you play Connor Hellebuyck and sometimes you play Spencer Martin.
Dater’s piece yesterday pointed to the turning point in Saturday’s game being the Cale Makar shorthanded marker. He’s right. At that point, it was 2-0 with the very potent Carolina power play (24.4%, 9th in the league) on the ice looking to make it a three-goal advantage.
Then, a telegraphed pass allowed Makar to intercept, skate the other way and blast a rocket that even Elon Musk would be jealous of. Boom. Landscape of the game: changed. For the first time all night, the Avalanche had life.
