MacKinnon Does it Again, Scoring OT Winner to Cap Comeback in Dallas
Nate moves into first place in league scoring, while Avs continue to win.
DALLAS — It was déjà vu all over again.
For the second time in as many games, Nathan MacKinnon capped an Avalanche comeback with the game-winning goal in overtime.
It was the Islanders Tuesday night in Denver who felt the wrath of the Dogg. Tonight was a different beast, though, as these were two huge road points on the line against Central Division rival Dallas. MacKinnon’s third point of the night came at 3:40 of OT as he buried the winner coming in on a 2-on-0, putting the puck just inside the far post blocker side for a 5-4 Colorado Avalanche victory.
The game only got to the fourth period because the Avs erased a two-goal third-period deficit, including an all-time ugly goal from Mikko Rantanen on the doorstep with the goalie pulled and just a minute and nine seconds showing on the clock. The point shot from Cale Makar bounced off a few players and then Rantanen’s skate in the crease before trickling in under the back of Stars’ netminder Scott Wedgewood, tying the game at four.
It must’ve felt like déjà vu for Dallas, too, as the 4-2 lead in the third evaporated, much like its 3-0 lead against Colorado had in the previous game that eventually materialized into a 6-3 Avs road win on Nov. 18. Blowing leads against the Avalanche at home is as commonplace for the Stars this season as MacKinnon masterpieces are for their Colorado counterparts.
