Keeping the Band Together and Beating Buffalo
Colorado is doing everything right... on the ice and in the front office.
Things are going well right now.
Before last night’s 6–3 win over Buffalo, the Avalanche front office did what it does best: re-sign another important piece of the puzzle.
A day after locking up promising young forward Gavin Brindley on a two-year extension with an $875K AAV, it was time to solidify the crease. Scott Wedgewood put pen to paper on a one-year deal carrying a tidy $2.5 million AAV through next season, eliminating any concern he’d bolt this summer. If he keeps playing the way he has early on this season, he would deserve to test the market and seek a big payday and a chance at being a team’s No. 1.
He chose to stay and play for this team and this group.
These smaller extensions come on the heels of Martin Necas’ much larger, much longer commitment signed at the end of October. With the big names secured for the foreseeable future and the depth pieces staying on very reasonable deals, the organizational spotlight now shifts to next summer — when Cale Makar’s extension talks begin. At that point, Chris MacFarland and Joe Sakic should honestly just ring his doorbell, ask him what numbers he’d like written on the check, back the Brinks truck up the driveway, shake hands, call it a day and leave with a contract in hand.
