I’m not a doctor, but Paul Rothenberg is. He’s the chief of sports medicine at Riverside Orthopaedic Institute and the medical director of Riverside Surgical Center in Rutherford, N.J. A surgeon, he specializes in both operative and non-operative treatments of sports-related injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle.

He’s performed the type of cartilage transplant knee surgery that Avalanche captain Gabe Landeskog underwent.

I spoke with Dr. Rothenberg the other day, and let’s make one thing clear: Landeskog is not his patient, and so he’s just making an observation about what’s been publicly disclosed about Landeskog’s condition—which has kept him off the ice for what is now into a third straight season.
