Dater: What Made The Martin Necas Contract A Reality

Let’s start with this: Martin Necas would have made considerably more money on the open market next July if he’d chosen to test it.
Necas knew it, his agent especially knew it, and Avalanche management knew it. What would have Necas have gotten? Assuming he continued to have the kind of season he’s been having, I would guesstimate $13 million per.
In the end, though, Necas signed for eight years at an $11.5 million cap hit. I talked to Necas’ agent, Michael Deutsch, yesterday, and he said it all came down to Necas preferring to stay in a city he’s come to like and play on a team with at least two future Hall of Famers for a long time to come. To do that, he agreed to take an offer in which both sides moved off of their original asks. Said Deutsch:
