Avs Pull Off Comeback in Vegas, Finally Win a Shootout
Colorado has no quit, stuns Vegas in 2-goal third-period comeback
For just the second time this season, I was sure the Colorado Avalanche would come away from a game without a point.
Down 2-0 and on a day when the team had to travel that morning, there was no chance the Avs would come back on the road against the Vegas Golden Knights.
But then… the game was tied.
A pair of flukey goals from Sam Girard and Martin Necas brought Colorado back to level, injecting hope and new life into the NHL’s best team. A tie game created a renewed sense of confidence that the result could now be flipped in favor of the visitors.
However, within 90 seconds of Necas’ tying goal — which deflected off the backside of a Vegas defenseman — the Golden Knights had restored their two-goal cushion. Ben Hutton and Brett Howden each found the back of the net, and thanks to the ‘BH’ boys in gold, it felt like another night of broken hearts for Avs fans hoping to keep the regulation-loss total at two.
Trailing 4-2 after 40 minutes, I was almost certain that number would balloon to three.
