There’s nothing quite like a huge comeback victory. You can’t quite believe it as it’s happening. You go through all the stages of grief when the game seems over, and then it all just reverses until you’re sitting there at the end going, “What just happened? Did we really win? Do you believe in miracles?”
OK, this wasn’t Team USA over the Soviet Union in 1980, Lake Placid (but, did you know my father filmed that game, as part of a larger film about the Games? Yes, he did).
But, any comeback from four goals or more always feels like something of a miracle. Final score tonight in Buffalo: Avs 5, Sabres 4 - after Buffalo had a 4-0 lead in the second period.
Here are your player grades:
John Ludvig (D) - A minus-2, fetid performance for the depth D-man. True, bad goaltending helped with that minus-2, but not much to say about his game tonight.
Devon Toews (A-) - Forget about his one assist and 28 minutes of otherwise good play. He might have made the play of the game when he hustled back to disrupt a breakaway chance for a Sabres player (forget who) when it was a 4-1 game. That was the kind of never-say-die play that brought the Avs back from the grave.
