What do you expect from two teams who have placed themselves amongst the group at the top of the NHL standings as legitimate Stanley Cup contenders? A tremendous game.

Colorado was bested by the New York Rangers Thursday night in a shootout at Ball Arena. The final score will show the Rangers with a 3-2 win, but that’s not the whole story of a game that was entertaining and a preview of the style of play we should come to expect as the postseason approaches.

The story, to me anyway, was a team in the Avalanche controlling play and dictating pace, only to be bested by an exceptional goaltending performance at the other end of the ice. Simply put, Igor Shesterkin played lights out and held the mighty Avs to just a pair of goals over the course of regulation, overtime and two rounds of a shootout.
