Avs Notebook: Trying To Figure Out What Malinski Extension Really Means

Trade deadlines are coming

I have to admit, I’m flummoxed on this one. I am having trouble seeing what the short-term play for the Avs will be, as we get near the Olympic break.

For those who don’t know, an NHL trade freeze will happen from Feb. 4-22, as the NHL shuts down for the Olympics. If the Avs are thinking of making a big trade - and, of course, there are rumors out there they might - then they have about a week to do it IF they want something done before the OFFICIAL trade deadline, which is March 6 at 1 p.m. mountain time.

Sam Malinski signs an extension of four years at $4.75 million per (which I thought was high, but that’s me). My immediate thought was “Oh, so NOW Sam Girard might really be traded.”
