Avs Notebook: Spurned By Kane
Plus: thoughts on last night and Dater Avs Anaheim Travel Memories
A one-year, short-money deal with the Detroit Red Wings was not what I, or anyone else in the hockey world, thought would be all Patrick Kane would settle for in his return to the league from injury. In the process, he said no to some very good teams, including our Colorado Avalanche.
While I don’t know just how much the Avs offered Kane, I’m confident it was as much or more than the $2.75 million he settled for with the Wings. He also turned down teams such as Dallas, Florida and Buffalo, and probably a few more.
I don’t get it. Detroit is a better team now, for sure, but they’re not going to win any Stanley Cup this season, not with their existing defense and lack of offensive depth.
But, hey, that was Kane’s choice. If I’m the Avs now, I say “who needs him.” Maybe he wouldn’t have been such a great fit on this team anyway. He doesn’t like to play defense, and he’s much older and coming off major hip surgery.
Adios.
