After looking closer at the standings this morning, instead of thinking the playoffs were something of a fait accompli for the Avs as I have for the last couple weeks, I suddenly realized: wait, this thing isn’t in the bag at all. Maybe you noticed that quicker than me (not hard to do).
And the biggest reason for this realization: the Avs have played too many games.
The Avs have a five-point lead on the, for the sake of argument, the No. 9 team in the West - Vancouver, 64-59. That’s great. Until you look at the games played for both teams: Colorado 55, Vancouver 53. That’s two games in hand for the Canucks, a potential four-point gain the Avs can do nothing about. The Avs’ 2-0 loss Tuesday night made things that much closer.
