Just what was needed.

The Colorado Avalanche had not scored a goal in a week’s time. But as soon as Ross Colton’s first-period shot got by the right pad of Jordan Binnington and into the side of the net in the first period, it felt as if a weight was lifted.

And with the weight of two-consecutive shutouts lifted from the shoulders of one of the league’s most high-flying teams, the table was set for a 4-1 win Wednesday night at Ball Arena at the expense of the St. Louis Blues.

Following a pair of 4-0 road losses in Pittsburgh and Buffalo — and with an extra day of rest before coming home to Denver — it seemed like a different Avalanche team. Colorado’s effort and execution were markedly better against the division rival Blues in this one and that led to the change in result.
