Alexandar Georgiev Can't Play Another Minute This Season
That's the takeaway from Game 1 in Winnipeg
This should have been a good, solid win for the Colorado Avalanche in Game 1 in Winnipeg. They kept the shots down on a very good Winnipeg Jets team, got three first-period goals on Connor Hellebuyck and generally played a great first period.
And the score, for all that dominance, was 3-3 after 20 minutes.
Final score: Winnipeg 7, Avalanche 6. Jets up 1-0 in the best-of-seven series. Game 2 on Tuesday night.
You knew it was over after that first period, to be honest. The Avs blew their chance, thanks to terrible goaltending from Alexandar Georgiev, who needs to be benched for the foreseeable future - and probably for good.
The Avs have the worst goalie in the league right now, in Georgiev. His confidence looks completely shattered. And, most important, the confidence of his teammates in him looks completely shattered.
Get him out, now.
Jared Bednar no doubt would have done that tonight, after probably the third Winnipeg goal in the first period, on the Jets’ seventh shot. But, in classic Avalanche playoff injury fashion, it was announced before the game that Justus Annunen would not be in the lineup because of an “illness.” Some guy named Arvid Holm was the backup listed on the score sheet.
